Targeting A*? The Difference Is Rarely Talent
Former Head of Maths | Eton & Westminster Experience | Current A-Level Examiner
Rated 5 stars across 30+ Trustpilot reviews ★★★★★
Most students who land on this page are already capable. The question isn't whether your child can reach an A* — it's whether they're being shown the specific exam technique, depth of understanding, and disciplined practice that turns capability into the top grade. At A-Level, the gap between an A and an A* is almost never the maths itself. It's the marks most students never realise they're losing.

"Before I started tuition with Lee, I was really struggling with maths at A level. Not just pure but mechanics and stats too, and I was getting in the 40s (around a D) in pure maths in my year 13 November mocks. After a few months of tuition I was able to get 89/100 in my most recent January maths paper 1 mock. I have also improved at stats and mechanics. I truly recommend Lee as he is a great person and tutor and will 100 percent up your grade.."
See Exactly Where the A* Marks Are Won and Lost
Here is one real A-Level question — worth 15 marks, a whole grade boundary in a single question. In my experience, very few students score all fifteen, and the reason is rarely the calculus. Try it yourself: have your child attempt it, then see it marked the way I mark papers as an examiner. In two minutes you'll see precisely where the marks are being won and lost.

THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I TEACH
What You Just Saw Is Exactly How I Teach
This isn't a clever app built to look like tutoring. It's a faithful distillation of the way I actually teach — the same method my small-group students get every week.
- I never just hand over the answer. I ask what you'd do, give you a moment to think, then reveal the next step — because the pause is where understanding forms.
- Every step comes with the reason it's necessary. Not "here's the rule," but "here's why this has to come next." That reasoning is what transfers to the next question.
- I show you exactly where marks are won and lost — method, accuracy and reasoning marks — because I mark these papers and I know what the scheme actually rewards.
- Then you prove it on a fresh question, unaided. That's the moment a student stops following along and genuinely owns the topic.
If your child found this helpful, that's because they just had a single lesson in the way I teach. The small-group programme is this — across every question type that decides the top grades.
A Structured Small-Group Programme Built for A*

Message me on WhatsAppWhy two sessions a week at A-Level?
At GCSE, one well-structured session a week is enough. A-Level is different. The volume and depth of content — and the precision the exam demands — genuinely justify two sessions a week. One to build new understanding, one to consolidate it under exam conditions. This is the workload that produces A* results at this stage.

"Mr Guffick has taught me from Year 11 through to Year 13 currently. He is very engaging and explains concepts thoroughly. He included everyone in the group and ensures we all have a chance to contribute. He has been extremely helpful and I enjoy his lessons!"

"Lee has tutored both my daughter and son for GCSE and A-level Maths and I cannot recommend him highly enough. He has a way of connecting with the pupil, making the subject matter both understandable and enjoyable. Not only has he improved my children's grades but he has managed to boost their confidence and motivation to do well."
Ann, April 2026
"Lee is professional and very knowledgeable about his subject and the specific exam board requirements. He has established a positive and effective rapport with my daughter, improving her understanding of the maths curriculum and how to approach exam questions; her mock grades have significantly improved in a short period."
Some Students Want More — That's Fine
Many of the students currently in the group also have one-to-one lessons with me alongside the group sessions, particularly in the run-up to mocks or for specific weak areas.
1:1 sessions are £120 per hour — or £100 per hour for students already in the group. You can take as many or as few as you need; there's no commitment.
The right path depends on the student:
- Some thrive in the group alone
- Some prefer the structure of the group plus one or two 1:1 sessions a week
- Some — particularly those targeting A* from a lower starting point — work best with intensive 1:1 support
There's no one-size answer. A short WhatsApp conversation is usually the fastest way to work out what's right for your child.
Where Our A-Level Students Go Next
Many of my students go on to achieve A in both A-Level Maths and Further Maths.* Former tutees have secured places at Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Imperial, Durham and other leading Russell Group universities — studying medicine, engineering, astrophysics, and maths.
That isn't a coincidence. The exam-precision a student builds in this group is exactly what the top grades — and the most competitive university courses — demand.
"I had Lee for 3 years through Year 11 to Year 13. He helped me get an A in Maths and aided me in getting into my chosen university."* — Year 13 student, August 2024
